Dark Alliance, a successor of sorts of the beloved Baldur’s Gate action-RPG spin-off games (Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 1&2), was revealed way back in 2019 during The Game Awards and after over a year, finally has something to show.
For starters, thanks to IGN, we have a release date for the game now: June 22, 2021. As well as a release date, IGN was able to secure an exclusive dev diary which details how the game evolved from a top-down action-RPG, similar to the original games, into something more “grand.” You can see for yourself below:
It’s definitely different, that’s for sure. Dark Alliance appears to a more modern action-RPG that ditches the isometric, top-down view for over-the-shoulder real-time combat.
While the Dark Alliance trailer does have a high amount of Likes, there is a noteworthy amount of Dislikes as well, which could be attributable to the change in gameplay from the original games. If you were expecting a faithful follow-up, you may want to reset those expectations.
That said, that doesn’t mean it still can’t be a solid action-RPG. Many D&D fans weren’t happy with the direction Baldur’s Gate 3 has gone in, replacing the old-school CRPG gameplay with Larian Studio’s style of play, but it still appears on track to be a solid game. So we’ll have to wait and see.
The trailer does appear to show off co-op gameplay, multiple different races, and potentially classes, which are staple features of the original game. And, as previously known, it will take place in the world of Icewind Dale.
If you like what you see, and you’re eager to hand your money over now in the way of a pre-order, you’ll be able to do so soon right here.
